Whose world is it? OSP/Sakai, Moodle and Web2.0 in Further and Community education

This paper addresses issues arising from trials of Sakai/OSP-based eportfolios in smaller institutions: colleges of FE, community learning, ALT. These trials raised wider process issues that should be of interest to all people working with portfolios in post-compulsory education, particularly with "adult returners". The paper challenges the notion that institutional systems are useful for reflection. The paper is aimed at teachers, learners, learning technologists and course organisers in the collaborative spaces between universities, FE Colleges and community centres.

Case Studies

Well this project is coming to a close and there is much to report.

Liam did a handy home page to link to them. I have made this image active so if you click you will go there (for as long as it remains live. Read the continuation of this article to see a brief summary and shots of the other studies.

Today I will repeat the experience with a group at Witney Campus. Below are notes from the Abingdon visit.

dotFolio

Thanks to Scott Wilson for reminding me about dotFolio. Coming at this from a open source e-learning perspective I am interested in knowing what the differences might be between the Open ACS family of projects, chiefly .LRN and what have been the chief contenders for open source learning environments: Moodle and Sakai.

Person Specs

Not sure if I am barking up the wrong tree.

I note that the introduction to IMS e-Portfolio says, tellingly:
"The IMS ePortfolio specification was created to make ePortfolios interoperable across different systems and institutions. The ePortfolio specification:
* Supports the advancement of lifelong learning important to many government initiatives.
* Makes exchanging portfolios from school to work transitions easier.
* Allows educators and institutions to better track competencies.
* Enhances the learning experience and improves employee development."

The first interest listed as served by IMS e-Portfolio is "government initiatives". The next is the transition to work. The third is "educators and institutions". Only the last item appeals to the individual "user", and then only in part.
